Happy Birthday to [livejournal.com profile] ravurian for today. There may be experimental gluten-free goodies in your future. ^^ I take requests.

It's been a very odd week. B's birthday was on the 18th and I sometimes suspect he and [livejournal.com profile] ravurian have to share the same psychic birthday space, for if R.'s approach to birthdays is decidedly minimal, then B's approach takes the concept of Birthday and explodes it with fireworks and people jumping out of cakes. It's been like the bloody Queen. We still have a large family party to come this Saturday, which I am hyperventilating about. For the Great Day itself, we parked the kids with various friends and went away for the night. We went out for a nice meal, just the two of us.

Actually, I don't think that really covers it. B. is a total foodie, and we went for a much-planned dinner at Heston Blumenthal's restaurant, The Fat Duck. Three Michelin stars, considered the best restaurant in the UK if not the world.

*gulp*

So. We had the tasting menu with - oh God - about 10 courses. It wasn't cookery. It was a cross between theatre, conjuring, and alchemy, which started with a sort of lime and green tea meringue ice, poached at the table in a large pot of liquid nitrogen. The whole thing was astonishing and in parts completely ridiculous. Read more... )

Anyway. Back now. Just one party to go, and then we can spend the next few months paying for it all. But, my word, that was truly a meal to remember.
